“A doodle is an unfocused or unconscious drawing made while a person’s attention is otherwise occupied.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doodle
Despite what Wikipedia states doodling involves it is absolutely imperative for creatives and non creatives alike. I had a professor who dedicated numerous lectures about the advantages of doodling to the learning process whether it is done in a business meeting or while on the phone or simply during a lecture. Doodling allows the hand to operate in an almost meditative way which allows the mind and ears to be free to absorb the material being presented. Another way to describe doodling in a more professional sense is known as scribing. Scribing allows the, at times, painstakingly boring oral presentation to be translated into something that most people can understand in a visual way. The following video illustrates how this is possible.
the next link also describes how scribing can help teams of people to solve real life problems in a more effective way.
Scribing takes time and effort in order to be effective though. You don’t need to be a great drawer but you need to understand how symbols work and how people perceive symbols and drawings.
I am an avid doodler in fact as a child I was often reprimanded for doodling while sitting in class “instead of paying attention” as my teachers would say. These new videos encourage and bring urgency to the importance of doodling.
“The art of drawing which is of more real importance to the human race than that of writing… should be taught to every child just as writing is,” declared John Ruskin, one of the most prolific writers of the 19th century. This tid bit has been taken from http://moreintelligentlife.com/blog/importance-doodling .
So is doodling a useless act which distracts young minds or should our education system be embracing this and using it to aid their lesson plans? I believe it should be incorporated in everyday learning as it allows a child to express and decode the information given to them in their own way and ultimately it is absorbed in a more meaningful way.
I haven’t posted anything in a while. Partly because I’ve been busy but partly because I’ve felt uninspired. Lately I’ve been thinking about my future and where exactly I want to bring myself as a young professional and also as brand. I’m not quite sure exactly what I want to do or where I will end up but I know I have to begin the transition now or it will never happen. I’ve been talking to a dear friend of mine, who is currently living half a world away and who I miss every day, and her words have encouraged me to bite the bullet and get on with this journey. (Thank you my dear friend I love you very much). I will have to keep this blog active with ideas, crafts, work, other blogs whatever I have to do to keep the inspiration flowing. In saying so today I am posting some of the work I’ve completed in school and for friends (invitations and business cards or magazine layouts and other various exercises).

I haven’t been writing much lately but I HAVE been drawing illustrations. Most of them are for friends and family members. This is what happens when a creative mind gets bored.
More to come… possibly… granted I don’t get bored of doing them like I do with everything else. :S
Florence and the Machine
I discovered Florence and the Machine thanks to a friend and I must say I’m absolutely in love with her music. One of my favorite songs by Florence is Hurricane. These are the lyrics:
I’m really looking forward to seeing new material from this band.
My little sister did my nails for me the other day and I must say they came out absolutely fabulous so I thought I’d go ahead and post the picture I took of them.
They’re great for parties!
So recently I’ve had a bunch of nightmares involving zombies. In the span of a month and a half I’ve dreamed of zombies attacking me about 5 times.
The first zombie dream I can remember was at an amusement park near my home. My mother and sister and I were supposed to be meeting people there. All of a sudden a mob of people start running away from the park and someone yells, “There coming the zombies are coming!” I hear this and start to run in the same direction as the crowd. My mother and sister don’t move and I’m yelling at them to hurry up cause we had to run away and they stand there as if they can’t hear me. Eventually the crowd pushes me away and I get onto a train of some sort.
After the doors close I sit there sad that my mom and sister are now probably being eaten alive by zombies. All of a sudden the people on the train with me (none of which I recognize) begin transforming into zombies.
The second zombie dream that I can remember just as vividly is slightly different. I’m sitting in what looks like my backyard but its slightly different with someone who I know but I can’t tell who it is. Then I see a mob of zombies and I run down a path to hide from them and lose the person I was originally standing with. Then I’m with a girl that I work with, one of my old professors, and my grandmother; we are trying to plan a strategy to safety. The girl I work with wants to fight the zombies, my professor wants to wait for help, and my grandmother just looks into the distance with her hands on her hips shaking her head and repeating, “They’re coming and they won’t stop until they get us. There is no way our we’re all going to die.” After she says this I wake up in a cold sweat.
I was quite curious about the negative images and decided to do a little bit of research on the matter.
I looked up what zombies symbolize in dreams from a couple of different places. http://www.dreammoods.com/dreamdictionary interprets the zombie attack like this:
“To dream that you are attacked by zombies, indicate that you are feeling overwhelmed by forces beyond your control. You are under tremendous stress in your waking life. Alternatively, the dream represents your fears of being helpless and overpowered.”
This makes sense to me since I’ve been feeling very down lately. I have a tremendous amount of stress because of work, school, and my private life. I think that the three people in my dream represent the different parts of my life and their reactions to the zombies (the negativity or stress lets say) are three different plans of attack that I could take to not feel so stressed.
I don’t know what I want to do with my future and I’m scared of making the wrong decisions. I also don’t have the confidence that I used to have and so taking risks and moving on with life is not something I’m even remotely comfortable with at this stage in the game.
I was really amazed by this article which was posted by one of my professors Richard Slaven.
I thought I share it with you because I was absolutely amazed by these designs.
